eSIM for Turkey: what travellers need to know

Turkey is the destination we get asked about most, and for good reason: Istanbul, the Aegean coast and Cappadocia are all easy to reach, and the mobile networks are excellent almost everywhere a traveller goes. The catch is roaming. Turkey sits outside the EU roaming zone, so the SIM in your phone will either charge you by the megabyte or quietly switch data off at the border. An eSIM fixes that in about two minutes, before you even leave home.

What an eSIM is, in one paragraph

An eSIM is a SIM card that lives in your phone's software instead of a plastic tray. You install it by scanning a QR code, it sits next to your normal SIM, and you decide which one handles data. Your home number keeps working for calls and messages; the eSIM handles the internet. When the trip is over you delete it, like an app.

Almost every phone sold since 2019 supports it: iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer. If your phone is from 2018 or older, check Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM. If the option exists, you are fine.

How much data do you actually need?

Most people overbuy. Here is what a typical day in Turkey costs in data, measured on our own trips:

ActivityData per day
WhatsApp, iMessage, email50–100 MB
Google Maps navigation (Istanbul, walking)100–200 MB
Instagram and TikTok browsing, 30 min300–500 MB
Video calls home, 20 min250–400 MB
Streaming a series episode in the hotel1–1.5 GB

A week of maps, messaging and a bit of social media lands around 3 GB. If you plan to stream every day, go for 10 GB or more. Turkish hotels and cafés have solid Wi-Fi, so most travellers never touch the upper end.

The mistake we see most often is buying a 20 GB plan "to be safe" and using 2 GB of it. Buy what the week needs; topping up takes one tap if you run out.

Which networks does the eSIM use?

Our Turkey plans run on Vodafone Türkiye, and the Max tier can also use Türk Telekom; both are listed with 5G. In Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Antalya you will be on 5G most of the time; on the coast and in Cappadocia it drops to 4G, which is still more than enough for maps and calls. Ferries on the Bosphorus and the Marmaris–Rhodes crossing keep a signal until a few kilometres out.

One thing worth knowing: calls and SMS are not part of a data eSIM. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Signal; they work perfectly over the data connection.

Installing it: the two-minute version

  1. Buy the plan on aynet.ai. You get a QR code on the order page and by email.
  2. On your phone, open Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM and scan the QR code with a second device, or tap the install link if you are on the same phone.
  3. Label the new line "Turkey", keep your home SIM as the default for calls.
  4. Switch Cellular Data to the Turkey line the moment you land, and turn Data Roaming on for that line only.

The plan's validity only starts counting when the eSIM first connects to a Turkish network, so installing it at home a week before the flight costs nothing.

Choosing the plan that fits the trip

Prices and what "incl. VAT" means

Every price on aynet.ai is the final price. VAT is included, there is no activation fee, and there is no subscription: you pay once for the plan you picked. On 29 September 2026, a 3 GB plan for 15 days was €4.99 and 10 GB for 30 days was €7.99 (Smart tier, VAT included). If you run out, the top-up offers appear under My eSIMs and are applied to the same eSIM within a minute.

Common questions

Do I need to unlock my phone? If it was bought on a contract, possibly. Carrier-locked phones cannot add a second line. Most phones bought outright are unlocked.

Can I keep using WhatsApp with my home number? Yes. WhatsApp is tied to the number it was registered with, not to the SIM that provides the data.

What if the QR code does not scan? The order page shows the SM-DP+ address and activation code for manual entry, and the install link opens a one-tap flow on iOS 17.4 and newer.

Does it work in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus? No, that is a different network area. Pick a Cyprus plan for that part of the trip.

The short version

For a one- to two-week trip to Turkey: a 3 GB Smart plan covers messaging, maps and photos; 10 GB if you stream every day. Install it at home, switch it on when you land, delete it when you are back. Your home number never stops working.
