eSIM compatibility checker: does my phone support eSIM?
Pick your brand, then your model. You get a yes or no from the maker's own list, the variants to watch for, and how to check your phone is unlocked.

Which phones support eSIM?
Every iPhone from the XS and XR onwards, every Galaxy S from the S20, every Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip, and every Pixel from the 4a onwards support eSIM. The exceptions are regional: most iPhones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao take two nano-SIMs instead, several Galaxy A models have eSIM only in some regions, and the Pixel 3, 3a and 4 depend on where they were bought.
Recent Xiaomi, Redmi Note Pro and POCO F models are on Xiaomi’s own list. Motorola, OPPO and Huawei publish no single list, so for those phones check in Settings with the steps below.
How to check eSIM support on your phone
If your model is not in the checker, your phone’s own settings are the final word.
On an iPhone
- Open Settings, tap General, then About.
- Scroll down: if you see an EID number, your iPhone has an eSIM.
- If there is no EID, it takes a physical SIM only.
On Android
- Open Settings and search for "eSIM".
- If you see Add eSIM or Download a SIM (Samsung: Connections, SIM manager; Pixel: Network & internet, SIMs), your phone supports eSIM.
- You can also look for an EID under About phone, SIM status. No EID and no eSIM option means no eSIM.
How to install an eSIM once your phone is ready
iPhone
- Connect to Wi-Fi, ideally before you fly.
- Open your eSIM email or My eSIMs and tap Install, or scan the QR code from Settings, Mobile Service (Cellular), Add eSIM.
- Choose the new eSIM for mobile data and keep your home line for calls and texts.
- When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM.

eSIM compatibility questions
How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?
Find your model in the checker above. If it is not listed, check in Settings: on an iPhone, Open Settings, tap General, then About. Scroll down: if you see an EID number, your iPhone has an eSIM. If there is no EID, it takes a physical SIM only. On Android, Open Settings and search for "eSIM". If you see Add eSIM or Download a SIM (Samsung: Connections, SIM manager; Pixel: Network & internet, SIMs), your phone supports eSIM. You can also look for an EID under About phone, SIM status. No EID and no eSIM option means no eSIM.
Do iPhones from China support eSIM?
Mostly not. Apple says that in mainland China only the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM. Other models sold there, and most iPhone 11 to 16 models sold in Hong Kong and Macao, use two nano-SIM cards instead. Check under Settings, General, About: an EID number means the phone has an eSIM.
How do I check if my phone is unlocked?
On an iPhone, Open Settings, tap General, then About. Look at Carrier Lock: "No SIM restrictions" means your iPhone is unlocked. If it shows anything else, ask the network you bought it from to unlock it before you travel. On Android there is no single screen for it: the reliable test is to insert a SIM card from a different network, or ask your network whether the phone is locked.
Can I use an eSIM and my normal SIM at the same time?
Yes, on phones with dual SIM support, which covers every eSIM iPhone and most eSIM Android phones. Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts, and set the travel eSIM as the line for mobile data.
When should I install a travel eSIM?
Before you fly, on Wi-Fi. Most plans start counting days only when the eSIM first connects abroad, so installing a few days early costs nothing.
