Since Brexit, the UK is outside the EU roaming rules. Some EU operators still include it at home prices, many now charge a daily fee or cap the data, and visitors from further away usually pay roaming rates. Check your own plan before you rely on it.

Good to know
- Turn on data roaming
- Once you land, switch data roaming on for the Aynet line. It costs nothing extra: the plan is the price. Keep roaming off on your home SIM so it does not charge you.
- When the plan starts
- Nearly every UK plan starts on your first connection in the UK; a plan that starts on installation says so before you buy. An unstarted plan shows its install-by date in My eSIMs.
- Cities, trains and the Highlands
- Cities and main rail lines are well covered. In the Scottish Highlands, parts of Wales and the national parks the signal can drop out for every network, so download offline maps before long walks and drives.
- Ireland too?
- The Republic of Ireland is a separate country, so a UK plan does not cover Dublin. One of our regional plans covers Ireland and the UK together; describe the route and we compare.

Questions travellers ask
Does my EU roaming work in the UK?
It depends on your operator. Since Brexit the UK is outside the EU roaming rules: some operators still include it, many charge a daily fee or limit the data. A UK eSIM gives you data at a fixed price whatever your home plan does.
Which network will I be on in the UK?
One of the British networks listed on this page. Your phone picks the one with the best signal where you are and can switch as you move.
Does it work in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
Yes, the plan covers the whole UK. Coverage is strongest in towns and along main roads and rail lines, and thinner in remote hills, as it is for every network.
Does a UK plan work in Ireland?
No, the Republic of Ireland is a separate country. For a trip to both, one of our regional plans covers Ireland and the UK.
Is there 5G in the UK?
Yes, where the networks have built it, mostly in the cities. Elsewhere you get 4G. You need a 5G phone to use it.
Do I get a UK phone number?
No. The eSIM carries data only. Your own SIM stays in the phone for calls, texts and bank verification codes.
What if I run out of data?
Top up the same eSIM from My eSIMs while the plan is running. No new QR code, and the price is shown before you pay.
Can I get a refund?
Yes, if the eSIM has never been installed. Once it is installed on a phone it cannot be refunded, because the profile is tied to that device.
