India is outside the EU roaming zone, so most UK and EU plans charge a daily fee or a steep per-MB rate there. A local SIM is cheap, but as a foreign visitor you usually need your passport, your visa and a photo at a shop, and activation can take hours or longer.
A travel eSIM skips that: you install a data plan at home, and your phone connects to an Indian network when you land in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru or Goa. Our India plans run on the network listed below, with 5G in the cities where it has been built and 4G elsewhere.
Nearly every India plan starts on your first connection in India, not at purchase. Your own SIM stays in the phone, so calls, texts and bank verification codes still reach you. The plan is prepaid: when the data or the days run out, it simply stops.

- Turn on data roaming
- Once you land, switch data roaming on for the Aynet line. It costs nothing extra: the plan is the price. Keep roaming off on your home SIM so it does not charge you.
- When the plan starts
- Nearly every India plan starts on your first connection in India; a plan that starts on installation says so before you buy. An unstarted plan shows its install-by date in My eSIMs.
- Cities and the mountains
- Coverage is strong in cities and along main routes and thinner in the Himalayan north, remote rural areas and some national parks. Download offline maps before long trips by road or rail.
- More than one country?

Questions travellers ask
Does my EU or UK roaming work in India?
Not for free. India is outside the EU roaming zone, so most home plans charge a daily fee or per-MB rate there. An India eSIM gives you data at a fixed price instead.
Do I need to show my passport to use it?
No. You buy and install the eSIM online, with no shop visit and no documents to hand over, unlike a local Indian SIM.
Which network will I be on in India?
The Indian network listed on this page, with 5G where it has been built. Coverage is strongest in cities and along main routes.
Is there 5G in India?
Yes, in the cities and many towns where the network has built it. Elsewhere you get 4G. You need a 5G phone to use it.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you fly, on Wi-Fi at home. On nearly every India plan installing does not start the plan; the days start when your phone first connects in India.
Will I still get bank codes by SMS?
Texts to your own number keep arriving, because your home SIM stays in the phone. The eSIM carries data only and does not give you an Indian number.
What if I run out of data?
Top up the same eSIM from My eSIMs while the plan is running. No new QR code, and the price is shown before you pay.
Can I get a refund?
Yes, if the eSIM has never been installed. Once it is installed on a phone it cannot be refunded, because the profile is tied to that device.
